The price ladder, and where the steps actually are

Robot vacuum pricing looks continuous and is not. Between $90 and $300 there are three real cliffs, and between them the money buys you almost nothing. Knowing where the cliffs sit is most of what you need to shop well, because the rest is picking a color.

The first cliff is around $150. Below it, machines navigate by bumping into things. They have infrared sensors that stop them hitting a wall too hard, and a pattern - zigzag, spiral, random - that they follow until the battery runs out. They are not stupid, but they have no idea where they have been. Above $150 you can buy LiDAR: a spinning laser that builds a map, which means the machine cleans in rows, knows what it has covered, and can be told to stay out of the dog's corner.

The second cliff is around $170. That is where a self-emptying dock becomes possible. The dock is the feature that changes your relationship with the machine: instead of emptying a 400 ml bin twice a week, you change a bag every two or three months. Nothing else in this price range alters the daily experience as much, and until recently it started at $400.

The third cliff is around $280. That is where obstacle avoidance appears - a machine that sees a charging cable on the floor and goes around it rather than eating it. LiDAR maps walls; it does not see socks. Below this cliff, a cluttered floor means rescuing the robot. Above it, mostly it does not.

Between those cliffs, the differences are marginal. A $200 machine and a $240 machine, both with LiDAR and a dock, differ mainly in how long the bag lasts and how loud the suction figure on the box is. That is why this site is organized by band rather than by brand: once you know which cliff your budget clears, the shortlist writes itself.

What the suction number is and is not

Every listing on this ladder leads with a Pascal figure - 4,000Pa, 8,000Pa, 12,000Pa. There is no shared test standard behind any of them. Pa measures the pressure differential the fan can generate with the inlet sealed, which is not the same thing as picking dirt off a rug. Two machines quoting the same number can clean very differently depending on brush design, airflow path and how close the inlet sits to the floor.

Worse, the number is not always comparable within a brand, let alone across brands. Some manufacturers publish the peak the machine hits in its loudest mode for a few seconds; some publish the figure at the fan rather than at the floor. And three of the best-known names here - iRobot, Shark and eufy on some listings - decline to publish a Pa figure at all, which tells you what they think of it as a marketing device.

We still use it, because it is the only cross-brand cleaning number that exists and refusing to use it would mean ranking on nothing. But it carries 25% of the score, not all of it, and a machine that publishes no figure is scored as unverified rather than assumed good. See how we pick for the weights.

The mistake almost everyone makes at this price

Buying for the mop. Every machine above about $110 here advertises mopping, and on most of them the mop is a damp microfiber cloth clipped to the underside and dragged around. It will take a light film of dust off a sealed hard floor. It will not lift anything dried on, it will not touch grout, and on any real spill it spreads more than it removes.

There are exactly two machines under $300 whose mop does something mechanically different: the Lefant N3, which vibrates at 12,000 cycles a minute, and the Roborock Q10 S5+, which scrubs at 3,000 and lifts the pad 8 mm clear when it meets carpet. If mopping is genuinely why you are buying, those are the two to look at and the rest of the mop marketing is noise. If it is not, buy a vacuum-only machine and put the money into suction and navigation instead.

Start with the band, not the brand

Brand loyalty is worth less here than in almost any other appliance category. The best machine under $100 is made by a company most people have never heard of; the best-known brand in the category sells one of the worst-value machines on this site. Pick your ceiling, read that band's page, and take the top pick unless one of the specific disqualifiers applies to your home.

Is a robot vacuum under $300 actually worth buying?

For hard floors and daily maintenance, yes - the sub-$300 tier now includes LiDAR mapping and self-emptying docks that cost three times as much two years ago. For deep-cleaning thick carpet it is not, and no machine at this price will replace a proper upright vacuum for that job.

What is the cheapest robot vacuum with a map?

At the time of writing, LiDAR mapping starts at about $149 with the iRobot Roomba 105 Vac. Below roughly $150 the machines navigate by bumping and pattern-following, with no map and no no-go zones.

What is the cheapest self-emptying robot vacuum?

Self-emptying docks start around $168 in this field, with the Tapo RV20 Max Plus. Below that price you will be emptying a bin of roughly 400 to 550 ml by hand, which with a shedding pet is a twice-weekly job.

Should I just wait for a sale on a more expensive model?
