Under $200, buy the Tapo RV20 Max: LiDAR mapping, 5,300Pa, a 3.27-inch body that fits under most furniture, and no dust bags to buy for as long as you own it. If you would rather never empty a bin, the Tapo RV20 Max Plus adds a 3-liter self-emptying dock for roughly $15 more and is the better buy whenever that gap is small.
This is the most important price band on the site. It is where LiDAR mapping stops being a premium feature and where a self-emptying dock becomes possible at all - and both of those cost around $400 as recently as two years ago. Why three of the five picks are Tapo
Because TP-Link is currently doing something nobody else in this band is: putting a LiDAR turret and, on two models, a self-emptying dock into a machine at a price the rest of the field reserves for bump-and-sense hardware. The RV20 Max Plus is the cheapest self-emptying LiDAR machine we can find anywhere, at any brand.
That is not brand favouritism, it is what the live prices say this week. It is also worth being clear about what the Tapo machines are not: their published 5,300Pa is a peak Ultra-mode figure rather than a running one, the 97% dust-pickup claim has no published test standard behind it, and the mop is a damp pad like almost everything else at this price. They win this band on capability per dollar, not on being the best machines in the category.
The $15 question: dock or no dock
The RV20 Max and the RV20 Max Plus are the same robot. The Plus adds a base station that sucks the bin out into a 3-liter sealed bag, good for roughly 60 days. When the price gap is small - and it frequently is - the dock is worth it to almost everyone. Not emptying a bin twice a week is the single largest quality-of-life difference in this whole category.
Two situations reverse that. A small flat with nowhere to put a tower: the dock is roughly the size of a kitchen bin and needs clearance on three sides, which in 500 square feet is a real cost. A refusal to buy consumables: the bags never stop, and over three years they add up to a meaningful fraction of the machine's price. On both counts the plain RV20 Max is the right answer, and it is why it ranks first here.
The machine to buy if mopping is the point
The Lefant N3 at around $200 is the only machine in this band whose mop does something mechanically different from dragging a wet cloth. Its sonic pad vibrates 12,000 times a minute, which agitates dried-on marks rather than smearing them, and its ultrasonic carpet detection changes direction when it meets a rug in mop mode instead of soaking it.
It pays for that with the lowest published suction figure of any LiDAR machine here (4,000Pa), a small 160 ml tank, and no self-emptying dock. That is a coherent trade if your floors are hard and actually get dirty - a kitchen, a hallway, a house with children. It is a bad trade if your floors are mostly carpet, in which case you would be buying a mopping mechanism you cannot use.
What the last $50 to $250 would buy you
Higher published suction - 8,000 to 12,000Pa rather than 4,000 to 5,300Pa, though the standardization caveat still applies.
Named anti-tangle brush geometry, which matters enormously with a shedding pet and is absent from everything in this band.
A bagless dock - the Ecovacs N20 Plus at around $215 removes the consumable entirely, which changes the three-year cost.
