On sealed hard floors almost anything has enough suction. What decides whether your floors get clean is whether the machine fits under the sofa.

We have not tested these machines. Everything here comes from published specifications, manufacturer manuals and retailer listings, all cited below. Prices last verified September 2, 2026.
How this is funded: if you buy through a link here we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which machines we recommend or what we say about them. Full disclosure.
For hardwood under $300, buy the Tapo RV20 Max. At 3.27 inches it clears most furniture, its LiDAR mapping covers a multi-room hard-floor home systematically, and it has no dust bags to buy. If your sofa clearance is under three inches, the eufy 11S MAX at 2.85 inches is the only machine here that will fit.
Hard floors are the surface robot vacuums were designed for and the one where a budget machine performs closest to an expensive one. Dirt sits on the surface, suction lifts it easily, and the difference between 4,000Pa and 12,000Pa is largely invisible.

Tapo RV20 MaxThe same slim LiDAR machine as the Max Plus with the self-emptying base removed. You empty a bin; you never buy a bag.
Lefant N3A sonic mop that vibrates 12,000 times a minute, which is a genuinely different mechanism from the damp cloth every other machine at this price drags around.
Roborock Q10 S5+The only machine under $300 that maps with LiDAR and sees obstacles with structured light. Everything else here is navigating half-blind.

Measure your sofa before you read another specification
This is the single most useful sentence on this page. The machines here range from 2.85 inches to 3.27 inches tall, and that half-inch decides whether the floor under your furniture ever gets cleaned.
It matters more on hard floors than anywhere else, because the strip of floor under a sofa or bed is exactly where dust collects - nothing disturbs it, air currents carry it there, and it stays. A machine that cannot get under is leaving the dirtiest part of your floor untouched while producing a satisfying map that shows the room as complete.

Slim for a LiDAR machine
A LiDAR turret adds height - which is why the mapping machines are taller. Measure the lowest piece of furniture in your house before choosing.
Brushless inlets are an advantage here
On carpet, a brushless suction port is a real handicap. On sealed hardwood it costs you almost nothing, because there is no pile to agitate - the dirt is lying on a flat surface waiting to be lifted.
What it gains you is that hair never wraps around anything, because there is nothing to wrap around. On a hard-floor home with a shedding pet, the Lefant machines are quietly one of the best value propositions in the category, and they cost under $110.
The other hard-floor brush consideration is scattering. A fast-spinning side brush on a hard floor flicks debris away from the machine rather than into it, which is why eufy specifically notes its single-side-brush design as a scatter-reduction measure. It is a small thing and a real one.
This is the one surface where mopping is worth having
Everywhere else on this site we are dismissive about budget mopping, because a damp pad dragged across carpet is pointless and across a lightly-used floor it achieves nothing you would notice. On a hard floor that gets actual traffic - a kitchen, a hallway, a house with children - a daily damp pass genuinely does keep the floor looking better than vacuuming alone.
If that is your situation, the Lefant N3 is the pick. Its pad vibrates 12,000 times a minute, which agitates dried marks rather than spreading them, and it is the only machine under $200 with a mechanism rather than a cloth. The trade is the lowest published suction of any LiDAR machine here and no self-emptying dock.

What it gets right
Identical published cleaning specification to the Max Plus, for less money
No dust bags, ever - the running cost is a washable filter and nothing else
The dock is a small charging pad rather than a bin-sized tower, which matters in a small flat
Full app mapping: no-go zones, room selection, scheduling
What it gives up
You empty the onboard bin by hand, which with a shedding pet is a twice-weekly job
Same manufacturer-reported 97% pickup figure with no published test standard
The mop is a damp pad rather than a scrubbing head
Only a small saving over the self-emptying version when that version is discounted

Who it is for: A small home where a full-size dock has nowhere to live, or anyone who refuses to buy consumables.
Skip it if: the Max Plus is within about $30 of this at the moment you are buying. The dock is worth more than $30 to almost everyone, and the two go on offer independently.

Carpet detection
Ultrasonic, raises suction and changes direction in mop modeSource: Manufacturer listing
What it gets right
Sonic scrubbing actually agitates dried-on marks instead of spreading them, which a passive pad cannot do
dToF is a better sensor than the bare LiDAR most machines at this price use - it is unaffected by ambient light
200 minutes and a claimed 3,200 sq ft covers a whole house in one run
Ultrasonic carpet detection means it stops wetting rugs without you drawing zones
What it gives up
4,000Pa is the lowest published figure of any LiDAR machine here
A 160 ml tank is small - a large hard-floor area will need a refill mid-run
No self-emptying dock
Sonic mopping consumes battery faster than a passive pad, so 200 minutes is the vacuum-only figure

Who it is for: Hard floors that actually get dirty - a kitchen, a hallway, a house with children.
Skip it if: your floors are mostly carpet. You would be paying for a mopping mechanism you cannot use and taking the weakest suction figure in the LiDAR group to get it.
No Wi-Fi, no app, no account. A remote control and two buttons. For a specific kind of buyer that is the feature, not the limitation.

What it gets right
2.85 inches is the slimmest machine in this entire field - it goes under furniture nothing else here clears
No app means no account, no firmware update that breaks it, and no cloud service to be discontinued
BoostIQ raises suction within 1.5 seconds when it meets carpet, without you asking
Tempered glass top, which after two years of being kicked under a sofa is not nothing
What it gives up
eufy publishes no Pa rating on this listing, so its headline capability is unrankable
No app also means no scheduling from your phone, no map, no room selection, no history
100 minutes is the shortest runtime here
A single side brush covers edges more slowly than a dual-brush machine

Anti-tangle
JawScrapers main brush plus anti-tangle side brushSource: Manufacturer listing
What it gets right
Structured-light obstacle avoidance is the single feature that separates a machine that finishes from one you rescue. Nothing else under $300 has it
A mop that lifts 8 mm means it can do hard floors and carpet in one run without wetting a rug
3,000 scrubs a minute is an actual scrubbing mechanism, not a damp pad
10,000Pa, dual anti-tangle brushes, multi-level maps - it gives up almost nothing to a $600 machine
What it gives up
The most expensive machine on this site, and it sits close to the ceiling
2.7 L bags are a recurring cost, and 70 days is mid-pack
The dock does not wash the mop - you rinse the pad yourself
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, which is an annoyance on a mesh network

Who it is for: A mixed-floor home with pets, clutter and rugs - the situation every other machine here handles by giving something up.
Skip it if: your floors are entirely hard and entirely tidy. Structured-light avoidance and an 8 mm mop lift are what you are paying the premium for, and a bare hard-floor flat uses neither.
Questions people actually ask
+−What is the best budget robot vacuum for hardwood floors?
The Tapo RV20 Max. At 3.27 inches it fits under most furniture, its LiDAR mapping covers a multi-room hard-floor home systematically, and it has no consumable dust bags. For very low furniture, the eufy 11S MAX at 2.85 inches is the slimmest option here.
+−Do robot vacuums work on hardwood floors?
Better than on any other surface. Dirt sits on top of a sealed hard floor rather than being worked into pile, so almost any machine here has enough suction. Coverage and body height decide the result rather than cleaning power.
+−How tall a robot vacuum can fit under my sofa?
Measure the clearance before buying anything. Machines on this site range from 2.85 to 3.27 inches, and the taller ones are taller because a LiDAR turret sits on top. The floor under furniture is usually the dustiest in the house, so this measurement matters more than it sounds.
+−Is a brushless robot vacuum good on hardwood?
Yes - it is the surface where a brushless inlet costs you nothing. There is no pile to agitate, so the missing brush is not a handicap, and hair can never wrap around a roller because there is no roller.
+−Is mopping worth it on hardwood?
On a floor that gets real traffic, yes - a daily damp pass keeps a hard floor looking better than vacuuming alone. But only two machines under $300 use a mechanism rather than a dragged cloth, and if you want mopping to mean something, those are the two to look at.
