Under $250, buy the Ecovacs DEEBOT N20 Plus. It publishes 8,000Pa, names its anti-tangle brush, maps with laser radar, and empties itself into a dock with no bag in it - which over three years makes it the cheapest machine in this band to own, not just to buy. If you have long-haired pets, take the Roborock Q7 M5+ instead for its anti-tangle side brush.
This is the band where the category stops feeling like a compromise. Every machine here maps, every machine here empties itself, and four of the five publish a suction figure above 6,000Pa. What separates them is not capability but cost of ownership and one specific weakness each.

The decision this band actually turns on
Bags. Four of these five machines collect debris into a sealed disposable bag; one does not. That is the largest real difference on this page and it is invisible on every product listing, because it is a cost you meet later.
A 3-liter bag replaced every 60 to 90 days is somewhere between $30 and $60 a year depending on brand and whether you buy generics. The Ecovacs N20 Plus's bagless container costs nothing, and Ecovacs itself puts the saving at up to $80 annually. Over the three years these machines are likely to last, that is more than the price gap between the cheapest and most expensive machine on this page.
The counter-argument is real and worth stating: a bagless bin has to be tipped out, and tipping out a container of dust and pet hair releases exactly the cloud that a sealed bag exists to prevent. If anyone in the house has a dust allergy, buy a bagged dock and accept the running cost. The Roomba 105 with AutoEmpty publishes the finest filtration figure here - 99% of allergens down to 0.7 microns - and that is the right machine for that household.

Pascal figures have no shared test standard between manufacturers. A higher number is not automatically better cleaning - see the suction guide for what it does and does not measure.
The Lefant M3's 12,000Pa is genuinely the highest figure on this entire site, and it comes with a dock that washes the mop in 45-degree water and dries it with cool air. That is a flagship feature set at a mid-band price. The reason it is not the top pick is not the specification, it is the risk profile: Lefant is the least established brand here, and a self-washing dock is the most complicated thing that can go wrong in this price range.
What you still do not get under $250
Obstacle avoidance. Every machine on this page maps with LiDAR, and LiDAR scans at turret height. It sees your walls and your table legs; it does not see the phone charger on the floor. The first machine that does is the Roborock Q10 S5+ at around $280, and if your floors have cables, toys or laundry on them that $30 is the best money in the category.
A mop that scrubs. The Lefant M3 washes its own pad, which is a maintenance feature, not a cleaning one - the pad is still dragged. The nearest thing to real scrubbing under $250 is the Lefant N3 at around $200, which vibrates at 12,000 cycles a minute but gives up the self-emptying dock to do it.
Deep carpet cleaning. Still no. It is not a budget problem, it is a physics problem, and it applies to the $1,200 machines too.
