A cheap robot vacuum is worth it if you have hard floors and want daily maintenance done without thinking about it - and under $300 you can now get LiDAR mapping and a self-emptying dock, which cost three times as much two years ago. It is not worth it if your home is mostly medium or high-pile carpet, if your floors are permanently cluttered, or if you expected it to replace vacuuming rather than reduce it.
That is the short version and it is the one most pages stop at. The useful part is knowing which side of the line your house falls on, so the rest of this page is about that.
What a budget robot vacuum genuinely does well
It changes the baseline state of your floor. This is the benefit people underestimate. A weekly vacuum means your floor is clean on Saturday and progressively less clean until the following Saturday. A machine running daily means the floor never leaves a fairly clean state at all. The dust, hair and crumbs that would accumulate simply never get the chance.
It cleans places you do not. The floor under a bed or sofa is usually the dustiest in the house, because nothing disturbs it and air currents carry dust there. A machine 2.85 to 3.27 inches tall goes there every day.
It removes a recurring decision. Not the physical work so much as the small daily judgment about whether the floor needs doing. Scheduled at 9am, it is simply done.
The four homes where we would say do not buy
1. Mostly medium or high-pile carpet. A robot vacuum carries a battery it must make last two hours, capping the motor, and weighs four to eight pounds, capping how hard any brush presses into pile. It maintains low pile and skims anything deeper, and this is true at $200 and at $1,200. If your home is carpeted throughout and you were hoping to stop using an upright, you will be disappointed by every machine on the market.
2. Permanently cluttered floors. These machines need a floor that is broadly clear. If yours has shoes, cables, toys or laundry on it as a normal state, you will spend more time tidying up for the robot than you would have spent vacuuming. Structured-light obstacle avoidance helps and starts at about $280, but it is a mitigation, not a solution.
3. A house of split levels with steps. These machines cannot climb stairs. On a house with several half-levels you are carrying the robot between them, which defeats the point. One machine per level is the answer and it multiplies the cost.
4. Anyone expecting mopping. On almost every machine under $300 the mop is a damp cloth being dragged. If mopping is the actual reason you are shopping, read the mop-combo page first - only two machines here have a mechanism, and if neither suits you, a robot vacuum is the wrong purchase.
What has genuinely changed in two years
Most 'are they worth it' articles are working from an out-of-date picture, so this is worth stating plainly. Two years ago, a sub-$300 robot vacuum meant bump-and-sense navigation and emptying a small bin by hand. Both of the features that made expensive machines worth having were out of reach.

That is why the answer to this question is more often yes than it was. It is also why we would treat any recommendation article written more than about eighteen months ago as describing a different market.
The honest arithmetic on cost
A robot vacuum is not just its price. Over three years you are also buying filters, brushes, side brushes, mop pads and - on most self-emptying machines - dust bags. A machine getting through six 3-liter bags a year buys eighteen over three years, which is a meaningful fraction of its purchase price.

Yes if your floors are mostly hard, broadly clear, on one level, and you want the baseline state of your home improved rather than a vacuum replaced.
No if you are carpeted throughout, if your floor is a permanent obstacle course, if you have several half-levels, or if mopping is the actual requirement.
