The best mapping under $300 is the Roborock Q10 S5+, and it is not close: it is the only machine at this price that pairs a LiDAR turret with ReactiveTech structured light, which is the sensor that sees things lying on the floor. The cheapest genuine LiDAR of any kind is the iRobot Roomba 105 Vac at around $149.
Mapping is the feature we would prioritize above every other on this site except a self-emptying dock. It is also the one where the marketing terms are used most loosely, so this page explains what each sensor actually does before it ranks anything.

The four sensor types, and what each one can see
Bump and infrared. No map. Infrared sensors slow the machine before contact and cliff sensors stop it falling down stairs; the machine follows a fixed pattern until the battery dies. It has no memory of the room. This is everything under about $149.
LiDAR. A laser on a spinning turret measures distance in every direction, several times a second, building a floor plan. The machine cleans in systematic rows, tracks coverage, resumes at the right spot after charging, and accepts no-go zones. It scans at turret height - roughly three inches off the floor - so it sees walls, furniture legs and doorways superbly, and it is completely blind to anything lying flat on the floor.
dToF. Direct time-of-flight, which is a more precise way of measuring the same thing: the sensor times individual light pulses rather than inferring distance from a returned signal. In practice it is less confused by bright sunlight and dark surfaces, both of which can defeat basic LiDAR. The Lefant N3 publishes dToF sensing to 10 meters.
Structured light. A pattern projected onto the floor ahead of the machine, with a camera reading how the pattern distorts. Because it looks down and forward rather than out sideways, it sees the phone charger, the sock and the dog toy. This is the sensor that determines whether the machine finishes a run on a normal floor. Under $300, the Roborock Q10 S5+ has it and nothing else does.

What a map buys you beyond coverage
Coverage is the headline benefit and there are three others people end up using daily.
No-go zones. Draw a rectangle in the app that the machine will never enter - around a pet bowl, a cable nest, a rug you do not want mopped. This is the app feature owners use most and it is impossible without a map.
Room selection. 'Clean the kitchen' rather than 'clean everything'. On a large home this turns a 90-minute job into a 10-minute one.
Recharge and resume. The machine returns to the dock at low battery and then goes back to the exact spot it stopped. Without a map it starts a fresh pattern, so a large floor plan may never get finished in one session.
Multi-floor maps. Several saved plans for a house with stairs. The Tikom L8000 Plus stores five, which is the most in this field.
What mapping still cannot do at this price
It cannot recognize objects. The machines above $500 that identify a specific item and label it in the app - 'sock detected' - use camera-based recognition trained on a database, and none of that exists under $300. Structured light on the Roborock knows something is there and drives around it; it does not know what it is.
It also cannot see anything transparent or highly reflective reliably. A glass door, a floor-length mirror or a dark gloss surface can confuse any of these sensors. If your home has a lot of glass at floor level, plan on drawing a no-go zone rather than expecting the map to handle it.

Skip it if: your floors are entirely hard and entirely tidy. Structured-light avoidance and an 8 mm mop lift are what you are paying the premium for, and a bare hard-floor flat uses neither.
