What $300 Actually Buys You

Follow the money up the ladder, one feature at a time. There are three real cliffs between $90 and $300, and a lot of flat ground in between.

Between $90 and $300 there are three real price cliffs and a lot of flat ground. $149 buys a LiDAR map. $168 buys a self-emptying dock. $280 buys obstacle avoidance. Everywhere else on the ladder, the extra money buys a larger suction number and a longer dust bag, both of which matter far less than any of the three.

This is the page to read before you decide on a budget, rather than after. Deciding to spend $220 and then choosing a machine is backwards - the useful move is to find which cliff you want to be above and then buy the cheapest machine that clears it.

One machine from each rung of the ladder, so the steps below are attached to something you can actually buy. Scores from the published rubric on How We Pick.

Cliff one: $149 buys a map

Below about $149, every machine navigates the same way: infrared sensors to stop it hitting things too hard, and a fixed pattern - zigzag, spiral, random walk - repeated until the battery runs out. It has no idea where it has been and no way to be told where not to go.

At $149 the iRobot Roomba 105 Vac fits a spinning LiDAR turret. The machine builds a floor plan on its first run, then cleans in systematic rows, tracks coverage, resumes at the right spot after recharging, and accepts keep-out zones you draw in an app. On anything larger than a studio flat, this is the largest single jump in the whole price range, and everything between $110 and $149 is essentially flat ground.

Cliff two: $168 buys a dock

The Tapo RV20 Max Plus at around $168 adds a base station that empties the robot's bin into a 3-liter sealed bag, good for roughly 60 days. This is the feature that changes how you live with the machine rather than how it cleans.

The onboard bins on these machines run from about 300 to 550 ml. With a shedding pet, that is a twice-weekly job you will do, resent, and eventually stop doing - at which point the machine runs with a full bin and cleans badly. The dock removes the failure mode entirely.

It has two costs: physical space, because a dock is roughly kitchen-bin sized and needs clearance on three sides, and bags, unless you buy one of the two bagless docks here.

Cliff three: $280 buys eyes

LiDAR scans at turret height. It maps walls and furniture legs superbly and it is blind to everything on the floor below its scanning plane - which is exactly where cables, socks, toys and dog bowls live.

The Roborock Q10 S5+ at around $280 adds ReactiveTech structured light: a pattern projected onto the floor ahead, read for distortion, which is how it sees the things that actually stop robot vacuums. Nothing else under $300 has it. If your floors are tidy this cliff is not worth clearing. If you have children, pets or a home office full of cables, it is the best $30 on the ladder.

Prices are the live figures on this site and move daily. The cliffs move with them; the structure does not.

What $300 still does not buy

  • Deep carpet cleaning. A physics limit, not a price one. It applies to the $1,200 machines too.
  • A dock that washes the mop and dries it with heat. The Lefant M3 washes with 45-degree water and dries with cool air, which is close, but full hot-air drying stations start higher.
  • Camera-based AI object recognition - the machines that identify a specific object and name it in the app.
  • Automatic mop-pad removal, so the machine can vacuum carpet after mopping without you touching it.

That list gets shorter every year, and faster than almost anyone expects. Two years ago LiDAR and a self-emptying dock were both on it. See cheap versus expensive for what the tier above actually delivers today.

What it gets right

  • The brushless inlet has nothing for hair to wrap around, so there is no brushroll to cut free every fortnight
  • 2.99 inches tall clears most sofa and bed frames that stop taller machines
  • Lithium iron phosphate cells, a chemistry that tolerates daily full cycles better than the usual lithium-ion
  • Nothing to subscribe to and no dust bags to buy

What it gives up

  • No published suction rating at all, which for a machine sold on suction is a strange omission
  • No mapping. It covers a room by bouncing around it, so a large floor plan takes several passes
  • The manufacturer says not to use zigzag mode on carpet, which rules out its most efficient pattern on rugs
  • Brushless inlets are weaker on embedded carpet grit than a beater bar

Who it is for: A one-bedroom apartment with hard floors, a shedding pet, and a hard budget ceiling under $100.

Skip it if: you have more than about 800 square feet of open floor, or any medium-pile carpet you actually want cleaned rather than skimmed. Without a map it will miss areas, and without a brushroll it will not dig.

Who it is for: A mixed-floor home with pets, clutter and rugs - the situation every other machine here handles by giving something up.

Skip it if: your floors are entirely hard and entirely tidy. Structured-light avoidance and an 8 mm mop lift are what you are paying the premium for, and a bare hard-floor flat uses neither.

How much should I spend on a robot vacuum?

Decide which of the three price cliffs you want to clear, then buy the cheapest machine above it. LiDAR mapping starts around $149, a self-emptying dock around $168, and obstacle avoidance around $280. Money spent between the cliffs buys larger numbers rather than new capabilities.

Is a $300 robot vacuum much better than a $150 one?

Yes, in two specific ways: it will have a self-emptying dock, and at the very top of the range it will see obstacles on the floor rather than only walls. It will not clean carpet meaningfully better, because that limit is physical rather than financial.

What is the biggest jump on the price ladder?

From about $110 to about $149, where LiDAR mapping appears. It changes the machine from something that runs a pattern and hopes to something that covers your floor systematically and can be told where not to go.

Is obstacle avoidance worth $30 more?
