What You Give Up Under $300

A shorter list than it was two years ago, and shorter than most articles admit. Here is what is genuinely missing, and which of it will still be missing in 2028.

Under $300 you give up camera-based object recognition, a mop-washing and hot-air drying dock, and automatic mop-pad removal. You do not give up mapping, obstacle avoidance, self-emptying, or high published suction - all four are now available under the ceiling. And you do not give up deep carpet cleaning, because no machine at any price has it.

Most articles answering this question are working from a two-year-old picture of the market, so the list is much longer than it should be. Here is what is genuinely missing today.

The three machines that give up the least. Scores from the published rubric on How We Pick.

What is genuinely missing

Camera-based object recognition. The machines that identify a specific object and label it in the app - 'cable detected', 'pet waste detected' - use a camera and a trained model, and that starts around $500. The Roborock Q10 S5+'s structured light knows something is in the way and drives around it, without knowing what it is. For most homes that distinction does not matter; for a home with a puppy, it is the one feature genuinely worth the money.

A dock that washes and hot-air dries the mop pad. Under $250 the Lefant M3 gets closest, with a 45-degree water wash and cool-air drying. Full heated drying - which is what stops a pad smelling in a humid house - starts higher.

Automatic mop-pad removal, where the machine drops the pad at the dock before vacuuming carpet. Under $300 the alternative is the Roborock's 8 mm mop lift, which is a genuinely good substitute and not the same thing.

Published noise figures. Almost nothing in this tier states a decibel rating. That is a disclosure gap rather than a capability gap, and it is a real annoyance in an open-plan home.

Current figures are the lowest live price on this site for a machine publishing that feature. The two-year comparison is directional market context, not a specific product's historical price.

What you give up at every price, forever

Deep carpet cleaning. A robot vacuum carries a battery it must make last two hours, capping the motor, and weighs a few pounds, capping downforce. Those constraints are identical at $200 and at $1,200. Any page implying that a more expensive robot deep-cleans carpet is wrong. The full explanation is here.

Stairs. No robot vacuum climbs them. A multi-level home means carrying the machine or buying one per floor.

Corners. A round machine cannot reach into a 90-degree corner, and edge-sweeping brushes are a mitigation rather than a fix. D-shaped machines do better and are still imperfect.

Tidying up. The machine cleans the floor it can reach. Shoes, cables and laundry are still your job, and obstacle avoidance only means the machine goes round them rather than through them.

What will probably fall next

The pattern is consistent: features fall under the ceiling when the underlying component becomes a commodity. On that basis, object recognition is the obvious next candidate - it needs a camera and a model, and both are getting cheaper on the same curve that brought LiDAR down.

Mop-washing docks are less likely to fall quickly, because a dock with a pump, tanks, a heater and a fan is mechanical rather than electronic, and mechanical costs do not fall the same way. That is the same reason battery runtimes have improved slowly while sensing improved fast. See why they are so expensive for the underlying economics.

  • Structured-light obstacle avoidance is the single feature that separates a machine that finishes from one you rescue. Nothing else under $300 has it
  • A mop that lifts 8 mm means it can do hard floors and carpet in one run without wetting a rug
  • 3,000 scrubs a minute is an actual scrubbing mechanism, not a damp pad
  • 10,000Pa, dual anti-tangle brushes, multi-level maps - it gives up almost nothing to a $600 machine

What it gives up

  • The most expensive machine on this site, and it sits close to the ceiling
  • 2.7 L bags are a recurring cost, and 70 days is mid-pack
  • The dock does not wash the mop - you rinse the pad yourself
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, which is an annoyance on a mesh network

Who it is for: A mixed-floor home with pets, clutter and rugs - the situation every other machine here handles by giving something up.

Skip it if: your floors are entirely hard and entirely tidy. Structured-light avoidance and an 8 mm mop lift are what you are paying the premium for, and a bare hard-floor flat uses neither.

Skip it if: anyone in the house has a dust allergy. A bagless bin has to be tipped out, and that is exactly the moment a sealed bag exists to avoid.

Skip it if: you compare machines on numbers. Shark asks you to take its word for the cleaning performance, and at this price several competitors publish a figure and let you check.

What do you still give up versus a $300 to $500 robot vacuum?

Less than you would expect, and in at least one case nothing at all - the $407 Shark AI Ultra publishes a 30-day dock capacity against its own $300 sibling's 60 days. Between $300 and $500 the money mostly buys a longer battery and a scrubbing mop rather than new capabilities.

Can a robot vacuum under $300 avoid obstacles?

One can. The Roborock Q10 S5+ at around $280 uses structured light to detect objects on the floor. Every other machine under the ceiling maps with LiDAR, which sees walls and furniture legs but is blind to anything lying flat.

Will a robot vacuum clean corners?

Not fully. A round machine cannot reach into a 90-degree corner, and the edge-sweeping brushes every manufacturer fits are a mitigation rather than a fix. This limitation applies at every price.
